Hot Stone Massage
Hot stone massage dates back thousands of years. Stones were used for healing work in India, China, Africa and more recently by the Native Americans. By using heated stones the benefits of heat and hydrotherapy are combined with the strokes of massage resulting in a very relaxing healing treatment.
The stones often used in this form of massage are smooth basalt rock which is formed when molten lava cools following a volcanic eruption. Basalt stones absorb and retain heat very well. The stones are heated in a water bath maintained between 120 and 130 degrees Fahrenheit.
The stones are used in two ways during the massage. By laying stones under the client with a sheet or towel between the client and stone and/or on top of the client, again upon a towel, the stones deliver heat to the body. At the same time, the therapist is massaging the client with oiled, heated stones held in the palm of the hand.
Benefits of hot stone therapy include muscle relaxation and increased local circulation and blood flow to the tissues resulting in the improved ability to remove toxins and waste products. Imagine luxurious warmth easing away the stresses of the day.
